Christ’s ambitious Library+ Project will encompass the demolition of 1970s library and its replacement with a new library, social and study spaces. Alterations to the kitchens, Upper Hall and adjacent areas will include new plant and access improvements as well as a new Servery.

The newly configured space and library will:

  • provide additional study space and an extended working library including an informal study hub and a multi-faith room.
  • an accessible run of buildings which address the needs of people with disabilities.
  • help to meet the College’s updated sustainability and environmental targets on the pathway to net zero carbon emissions.

A planning application was submitted on 30 May 2025.

The design concept provided by Dublin-based Grafton Architects develops the idea of a Library in a Walled Garden.

It is inspired by the historic roofscape of dormer windows and chimneys and the site at Bath Court as a Kitchen Garden, part of an ensemble of historic courts and gardens at the College.

A deep masonry wall is formed onto Christ’s Lane, with structural air and light chimneys reminiscent of many Cambridge walls. A lighter timber structure ‘leans’ onto this wall with a continuous ‘pleated’ rooflight. The ‘pleated,’ sloping roof creates a canopy of light and shade for the library interior, collects solar energy and rainwater, promotes the circulation of air, and absorbs sound.

The new library comprises four levels gathered around a three-storey reading room. The library is approached through an existing passageway in the southeastern range of First Court. This opening leads into a transformed Bath Court, which becomes the forecourt to the new library.

The library is accessible via lift and staircase from a ground floor Entrance Hall.

The new building will fully connect with adjacent historic building ranges from the Bodley Library through to Upper Hall. Two new passenger lifts will provide step free access for the first time in the College’s history.

Upper Hall will connect to the new Library at first floor level allowing it to be used as an extension of the library, providing additional study areas at key moments during term time. There will be a new extended servery and an upgrade of the kitchen facilities which involves electrification of equipment as part of the environmental strategy.
