Some of the works created during these workshops are presented here either in their original format or through documentary photographs. The works featured from the life drawing workshop are a result of very dynamic sessions where students were asked to create drawings in the span of one, three, five, ten or twenty minutes using different materials (e.g. chalk, paint, pastels, paper, cardboard, fabric, glass, feathers, sparkles). During the sessions students also used various methods of creating drawings, such as drawing with their left hand, not looking directly at the paper, drawing with their hands, drawing with sticks on top of the paper, and even drawing on the walls, ceilings and floor of the studio creating an almost installation-like effect. In each of the sessions they worked with a different model, allowing them to experience and work with a variety of body shapes, types, age groups, and poses. Attention was momentarily drawn to the various qualities of anatomical features of the model, but emotions, moods and feelings never took a secondary position in importance. The students level of experience in life drawing (and drawing in general) was quite varied though irrelevant to the resulting quality of work. The works featured from the experimental art workshop focus less on the aesthetic aspect of the work and more on conceptual issues surrounding the artwork. For instance many of the works created in the public park (Christs Pieces) are visually quite simplistic, but carry powerful messages as to mans relationship with nature, objects and the blending of the world within and around. During each session the students were asked to respond to a particular space (inside or outside the art studio) as well as a specific topic (e.g. make the visible invisible (or vice versa), extending the limits of the space, personalizing the space). Thus, all the works demonstrate small or large-scale physical interventions in a particular space, as well as students exploration of and/or a dialogue with that space. Some of the works also created an opportunity for interaction with the public. Past comments from students attending Life Drawing classes: I have been a member of the workshop at 鶹 since the beginning of the academic year 2007/2008 and believe its activities to be one of the best things that happened to me in Cambridge. There is much more to enjoy there than relaxation and access to materials. Michal Dziedziniewicz, Maths student I have been to many other lifeclasses, but Issam's is special. Issam brings a huge energy and inventive playfulness to the class and it is infectious. Each class I feel to have been visually challenged, whether it's been by trying to draw a model in a sock or change my natural scale or draw with both hands simultaneously, I am always swept out of whatever rut I came to the class in. The rhythm of the class also works very well and makes it hard to lose focus or become obsessive. Attention is momentarily drawn to the various qualities of anatomical features, but emotions, moods and feelings never take a secondary position in importance. Experimentation is always encouraged.
