Christ鈥檚 College is seeking a new Senior Tutor after Dr Robert Hunt announced he would step down in January 2023.

The College has launched a wide-ranging search for an outstanding candidate with experience of handling complex pastoral situations and management experience in higher education. Experience of teaching and research is also desirable.

The Senior Tutor, a senior leader at Christ鈥檚, is responsible for the educational strategy and activity of the College and for the work of the Tutors.

Christ鈥檚 College, founded in 1505, is a community of 441 undergraduates, 272 postgraduates and 93 Fellows. The new Senior Tutor will be elected to the Fellowship.

The Master, Simon Lord McDonald of Salford said:

鈥淭his is vital role in the College. We can promise the successful candidate a varied, demanding and rewarding workload.鈥

The Senior Tutor plays an active role in College governance, as a member of College Council and through a range of committee meetings, contributing to decision-making that will impact the College community in the immediate and long term.

The Senior Tutor also works in wider University circles, participating in key committees that oversee initiatives in support of welfare and education.

An interim Senior Tutor - Dr Tom Monie - has been appointed for January to August 2023. The substantive new Senior Tutor post is available from 1 September 2023. The successful candidate will be offered appointment prior to that date, to work alongside Dr Monie.

Mathematician Dr Hunt has been Senior Tutor at Christ鈥檚 since 2008. Under his leadership the College has grown its postgraduate numbers, dealt with the educational impact of Covid, transformed its mental health support for students, introduced many new studentships and bursaries, and produced consistently excellent academic results.

Dr Hunt said:

鈥淚 am immensely proud of my 14 years as Senior Tutor at Christ鈥檚. I was appointed in 2008 to succeed Dr Kelvin Bowkett, and I am now handing over the reins. But I shall stay at Christ鈥檚 as a Life Fellow and will continue to be both a Tutor and the Director of Studies in Mathematics.

Christ鈥檚 students are phenomenal in many ways, and aided by the dedication of our Teaching Fellows and the pastoral support of their Tutors they have excelled academically 鈥 I could not be happier about the College鈥檚 results, consistently the best in Cambridge.

But our students also excel in many other ways outside their studies, and the entire community of students and Fellows is a friendly and congenial one, which has made my job so much more gratifying!鈥
